EMERGENCY & FAQ – WELL INFORMED, QUICK HELP
Quick Help and Answers
Here you find advice and answers for common problems with your braces. Whether you have a sore or a wire is loose – we show you what to do and when to contact us.
The appliance hurts or is bothering you a lot
If your appliance hurts your gingiva or is bothering you in another way, stop using it and quickly schedule an appointment with us!
The plastic base or a wire broke
In case of a broken plastic base or wire, schedule an appointment with us as soon as possible – in most cases this can be fixed.
My appliance does not fit anymore or is lost
There is great risk of orthodontic relapse and loss of treatment achievements in case of periods of disuse of your appliance – please schedule an appointment at once.
A Bracket or Band (metal ring) is loose
You should come see us immediately to have the loose parts reattached. Please save all parts and bring them with you to the appointment. Please schedule an appointment with us without further delay!
A wire is loose
You may be able to carefully reinsert the wire into the bracket or band with a pair of tweezers. If not, you can cover the end of the wire with protective wax for protection until you can come into the practice.
The end of a wire is bothering me
Cover the end of the wire with a ball of protective wax to protect soft tissue. If you have nothing else available, sugarfree chewing gum does the job, as well. In some cases you can shorten the wire with a small pair of scissors. In any case, please schedule an appointment with us.
Wire ligatures or rubber bands were lost
Tell us during your next appointment.
Pain or sores
It is possible your child experiences pain for a couple of days after receiving fixed brackets. You can alleviate mild pain with homeopathic preparations. In case of strong pain and after consulting your pediatrician, painkillers (for example Ibuprofen/Nurofen) may be administered. In cases of sores inside the mouth you can use an antibacterial mouthwash (for example Meridol) or rinse with cool chamomile tea. In any case careful toothbrushing continues to be very important, as bacterial infection of the gums is in itself very painful.
I lost my aligner
If your aligner was new you may be able to wear the last aligner you had before this one. Please inform us so we can have a new aligner made and mail it to you. If you had already been using the lost aligner for a couple of days, you can try to move on to the next aligner slightly ahead of time. Do this with caution.
My aligner broke apart
Please inform us immediately and schedule an appointment – if possible, continue to use the broken aligner – usually this does not cause problems.
My aligner does not fit properly
Schedule an appointment and bring with you the last 3 aligners that you used – in this case we need to check, whether the adjustment worked out as planned.
There are sharp edges on my aligner
As a first step you can try to carefully smoothen sharp edges on the aligner with a nail file. Please make an appointment with us, as well, so we can professionally smoothen the edges.
